As Part of Guidance and Educational Counselling Week, the College of Education – University of Shatrah Holds an Awareness Seminar.
Under the patronage of the President of the University of Shatrah, Prof. Dr. Basim Abdul-Hussein Jarallah,
and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Education, Prof. Dr. Afrah Abd Maktouf,
the Department of Arabic Language at the College of Education organised an awareness seminar entitled:
(The Role of Psychological Counselling and Educational Guidance in Warding Off Extremist Ideas)
The seminar was presented by:
Asst. Prof. Dr. Taiseer Qasim Atiya – teaching staff member in the Department of Arabic Language
Asst. Prof. Dr. Kadhim Khudhair Kadhim – teaching staff member in the Department of Arabic Language
The seminar was attended by a number of the college's professors and a group of students.
The seminar pointed out that extremism is not necessarily always negative; it may be positive in total acceptance or negative in total rejection, and the point of moderation lies midway between the two. It cited historical and philosophical sayings on extremism and neutrality, and reviewed historical models of extremism such as (Nazism – Fascism – the Crusades – racism – Zionism – takfiri Salafism).
The seminar's themes included defining extremism and identifying its psychological and social dimensions:
First theme: Concept, manifestations and effects
The first theme addressed the concept of extremism as exceeding the bounds of moderation and as a stance based on estrangement, with reference to its psychological roots associated with intellectual imbalance and certain negative traits such as narcissism and selfishness.
It also addressed its behavioural manifestations, represented by bullying and contempt for and rejection of the other, and explained its serious effects on human relationships and social behaviour.
Second theme: The role of psychological counselling and educational guidance
The second theme reviewed the important role of psychological counselling in intellectual prevention and building awareness, through:
– Enhancing intellectual flexibility and the values of tolerance and acceptance.
– Supporting a positive identity and self-confidence among young people.
– Providing a safe environment that eases frustration and tension.
It also stressed the importance of the early detection of dangerous behavioural indicators and the provision of individual and group counselling sessions that help correct intellectual paths and strengthen psychological and social security.
On the sidelines of the seminar, extensive discussions took place on mechanisms for activating psychological and educational counselling in schools and universities to strengthen intellectual security.
The seminar concluded by affirming the role of educational institutions in safeguarding young people and building an aware generation capable of facing intellectual and behavioural challenges.
This seminar is part of a series of awareness activities carried out by the Department of Arabic Language within its community responsibility aimed at supporting moderation and consolidating the values of temperance.
